About Retired Woman China, '79

Eve Arnold was one of the very first photographers to gain access to China when the country opened up at the end of the Seventies. She made two journeys of several months on assignment for the Sunday Times Magazine. Her aim was to photograph as many aspects of society as possible and travelled far and wide. The schedule was punishing and she fell ill with bronchitis. One morning, still very ill, she ventured out and glimpsed this old woman in a doorway. She took one shot before the woman retreated back in the darkness. This picture has become one of her most enduring images and is the cover of her awardwinning book ‘In China’. Eve recounts how for many years her grandchildren thought this was a self portrait of Eve herself. Now that Eve approaches her centenary year, she has kindly donated this signed print with her wishes of good health and recovery to all young breast cancer sufferers.
